You are here: Home > What Roller Skate to Buy
Roller skating is travelling on smooth terrain with roller skates. It is often done for recreation and as a sport, but, more often than ice skating, it can be done functionally for moving around (it is faster than walking). The skates come in three basic varieties: inline skates, quad skates, and the quintessence skate.

Finding the right skate for you!

Many things need to be considered when purchasing a pair of skates. Finding the right size, color, and style are very important, but perhaps the most fundamental and relevant aspect to finding your perfect pair of skates lie in answering a simple question:

What type of skating do you want to do?

You have a variety of options and combinations to choose. It may be recreational skating, either indoor or outdoor or both or perhaps competitive such as Artistic, Speed or Hockey. Knowing the answer to this question is important because skate manufacturers build skates that are specifically geared to certain styles of skating, and finding the style that best compliments your style of skating will greatly enhance your enjoyment.

There are a great many different combinations of boots, plates, wheels and bearings as well as packages from which to choose. The overall rule: BUY SKATES TO SUIT YOUR TYPE OF SKATING!
With this being said, roller skates can be placed into five categories:

Recreational Roller Skates

Outdoor Roller Skates

Speed Skates

Childrens Skates

Artistic Skates

Skates can be either high top or low tennis shoe style. The hardness and softness of a roller skating wheel determines indoor or outdoor skating. The hardness and softness of a wheel is measured in numbers such 95 or 95A, and the higher the number the harder the wheel. Outdoor wheels are softer and wider which make it possible for the wheels to grip difficult terrain.
Most skates have double action trucks which mean 2 cushions that make turning easier.

Stopper on skates are either fixed (held in place by a single screw) or adjustable.

One important point, with skates you really get what you pay for. Cheap skates will make the skating experience lousy and you will be more likely to quit. You do not have to spend a fortune. The less expensive skates are great for kids, adult should NEVER purchase anything under $50.00.

NewSkates.com will not sell skates in Adult sizes that we feel will not perform properly. Remember, do not over buy. Just because more experienced skaters use higher end products, does not mean you should. You may have different needs. Normally medium priced skate outfits offer the best buys for the recreational skater. Buy quality skates backed by a quality company like NewSkates.com
